Six miles east of Humble is Atascocita, Spanish for "obstruction",
sitting on heavily wooded territory that was once a Spanish government
possession and served as a stronghold against the French. Atascocita
and its neighboring community of Walden fringe Lake Houston, a man-made
lake. Concentrated home-building began in 1975. Prices range from
the $50,000s to the low $100,000s. The suburban community offers large,
country-club style homes as well as smaller homes in well-planned
subdivisions.
